Days 24 and 25 - Death Valley

We hope you were not worried because you haven't heard from us in a couple of days. We got back to the hotel late yesterday, had tons of pictures to sort, and our internet connection was horrible. But we are caught up now and we are doing great. Our hotel turned out to be really cool, an oasis in the dessert with lots of antiques, good food, and entertainment.

This old chapel was on the inn property. We renewed our vows!

Just when you think you've seen the most amazing scenery you come across a place even more amazing. USA is a very beautiful country with so many varied masterpieces of nature! We are lucky to call USA home. These last 2 days we spent driving and hiking through Death Valley. At over 5,000 sq miles, it is the largest national park in the contiguous U.S., has so much varied terrain from the basin, 282 ft. below sea level, to mountains 11,000 feet high, a waterfall in the midst of the vast, barren land. Luckily we came in winter. We avoided the 120 degree temperatures and the summer vacation crowds. The weather was nice, although it can be winter-coat cold in some areas and t-shirt and shorts in other areas on the same day. Here we will try to give you the highlights in pictures.

We hiked a mile to this waterfall

It was a very challenging hike! At one point we had to use a rope to get down this rock.
Feeling proud that we made the hike. The waterfall is in the background.

In front of Artist's Drive, a view of multi colored hills.

Atop Dante's View

Amazing Dante's View, 5475 ft high! In the far background you can just see Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the continental U.S., and in the center where it is white, the Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America, which is 282 feet below sea level. The white is salt.

Brothels are legal in Nevada. Phil just couldn't resist stopping at Chicken Ranch Brothel for lunch.
